RE: Questions
Hobbyist? No. I'll be working at this company for approximate 2 more weeks
- simply the fact that they are still using these beasts _in production_ is
a sign I think of worse things to come. We run our ERP on one of the VAXen
and the engineers develop code based on an old DEC processor on the other
VAXen. The PDP is where our in-house barcoding system is running.
The setup is pretty simple. The three DEC machines all speak DECnet (the
VAXen run v4 and I have no clue as to what the PDP runs) over 10Base5
connected to a DELNI-AA. I connected my Linux gateway to our 10BaseT
ethernet using one interface and used an Intel EtherExpress 16 with an AUI
jack as the other interface to connect it to the DELNI-AA. Obviously that
interface is speaking DECnet.
If we serial connect in through a MUXmaster (MINX-NET) to connect to a
terminal server, I can connect to any one of the three DEC machines.
However, if I telnet to my Linux gateway and then issue sethost commands,
only the two VAXen respond. _And_ if I telnet to the Linux box and then
connect to one of the VAXen, I can't even SET HOST to the PDP. I get a
prompt but it simply sits there. No interactivity.
Oh, and we haven't really run any speed tests, but the connection from the
Linux box to the VAXen seems to be plain old Ethernet speeds.
