lo isn't an Ethernet type interface.  I looked at it for a bit as a
way to test DECnet within a box and found it not really useable
(that's why I use ethertap now).

No, the segment size sent by each end is the largest it will accept.
It applies in that direction.  It's perfectly legal for the two to be
different, and depending on the implementation it may be possible for
a node to send bigger segments than it can receive.
